» Industrial/Community Assistantship Program
SERGEY LAPSHIN CAME FROM MOSCOW to pursue a Ph.D. in the polymer Mecca of U.S.-Akron. Now in his last year at University of Akron and third year interning at OMNOVA Solutions Inc., Sergey already has a wealth of professional experience in NMR Spectroscopy Analysis, which uses the same technology as MRI to analyze chemical compounds.

OMNOVA began its internship program partnership in 2002, as part of the University of Akron's Industrial/Community Assistantship Program in Graduate Education. Chris Woods, OMNOVA's manager of analytical solutions says "Having interns enables us to balance our small number of employees with a large demand for manufacturing solutions and fast customer turnaround."


» How an Internship Can Lead to a Job
BENEDICT JAKUBEN GREW UP IN MENTOR OHIO and graduated from Case in 2003. He chose a college close to his family and everything he knew and liked in Cleveland. A successful interview at Progressive (#3 nationwide for auto insurance plus recreational vehicles including Segways) landed Ben an internship with real responsibility creating XML-based reports on training data that are still being used. His intern experience served as a 6-month interview. Ben is now an application programmer/analyst level 1 writing code for infrastructure to support HR systems. Ben loves Cleveland's cultural offerings, biking and hiking that's only a short drive away in Cuyahoga Valley, Akron's minor league baseball and Stan Hywet Hall and Garden where he proposed to his wife.

» Chose Northeast Ohio Over Yale and MIT
JASON KISS HAILS FROM AURORA, OHIO He just graduated from Hiram College capped off by a year-long internship at Hyland Software in Westlake. Jason considered lots of colleges including Yale and MIT. But as he explains, "Hiram was a school where I could do everything I like. I didn't have to be a music major to sing or a political science major to be in the Senate." Hiram and Northeast Ohio proved to be a winning combination for this computer sciene major. He found his ClevelandIntern.net certified internship through Hiram's Career Center and was pleased to find that Hyland gives its interns lots of responsibility. Jason has successfully parlayed his development work for Hyland's document management software, Onbase, into his first job!

» Using His Head On And Off The Field
STRONGSVILLE, OHIO'S, MATT LEMKE is happy he chose John Carroll over schools in and outside of Ohio for its strong academics, its EMS program and so he could play college-level football. As a biology major, Matt took advantage of John Carroll's annual placement of 10 student interns at the Cleveland Clinic, where he performed cell research on the transcription and clotting factors of coronary arteries. Last summer, he interned in the Clinic's Center for Neurological Restoration, building stroke treatment models with non-human primates. Afer graduation, Matt wants to head to medical school. In Ohio, of course.

» Cool Projectgs At A Hot Agency
LINDSAY DEVORE AND KYLE BOYD have both interned on the John Deere account at Malone Advertising in Akron. Kyle, a marketing major at University of Akron, began as a production intern and continued in a second internship as an Account Coordinator placing print ads for John Deere Canada. Lindsay came from Monongahela, PA to Kent State for its advertising program. As a senior, Lindsay posted her resume on Monster and got a call from Malone to intern on the John Deere account in the media department. She hapily chose to stick around Northeast Ohio as a Malone Media Coordinator after her May graduation.

» Learning First Hand What Makes Akron Tick
MAGGIE SOPOZHNIK MAJORED IN ENGLISH, minored in Russian, and put it all to good use interning at the Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce. Maggie used her Kent State education to perform research for the Chamber's important workforce development study on "Talent Attraction and Retention" as well as acting as a proofreader for newsletters, brochures and other PR materials. She also got to reach outside the Chamber and participate in several events including political functions, the Akron Roundtable, and Young Professional gatherings. What a great way to nurture Maggie's future business aspirations.
» Born and Thriving in Cleveland
DOUG GAMBLE GREW UP in Cleveland. He chose Cleveland State to be close to friends and family and to capitalize on the city's phenomenal networking opportunities. This summer, Doug will be an account services intern at Cleveland's leading-edge Advertising/PR firm, Liggett Stashower, where he will get to do some media planning and buying. Doug's already a pro at networking, which led to his founding and Presidency of The Cleveland State Advertising Association. With a few years of experience under his belt, Doug hopes to open his own agency.

» Interning at a Top Research Center
CORTTRELL KINNEY'S education took him from a Cleveland public high school to an undergrad degree at Morehouse and back to Cleveland for a Ph.D. at CASE in Cell Physiology. His internship at Lerner Research Institute revolves around finding the molecular targets to create anti-inflammatory drugs for vascular injuries. Through his Lerner internship Corttrell has met international leaders on the forefront of science, even Nobel laureates. Corttrell hopes to stay and work in Northeast Ohio where he would love to do research and teach in a college.

» Athlete Turned Baseball Businessman
BRIAN HOWARD CAME FROM NORTHERN MICHIGAN to Kent State University to play basketball and major in marketing. Networking got him an internship with the Cleveland Indians where, as a customer service rep and sales associate, he made sure all the minor league pre-game activities were properly facilitated. Today, Brian works as an account executive with the Indians at Jacobs Field and credits his internship mentors for teaching him the fundamentals he needed to succeed.

» Preserving the Environment One Internship at a Time
CHRISTINE VAN FOSSEN'S INTEREST IN LAND CONSERVATION and the open internship at Cuyahoga Valley National Park were a perfect pairing for the Internship Advisor at University of Akron. At the Park, Christine evaluated the success of their direct mail and web marketing campaigns and became comfortable with the media while accompanying the Deputy Supervisor on interviews. The first internship led to a second one this summer at the National Park Service in Washington D.C. in the Office of Policy. Christine is hoping that her degree in Business and Organizational Communications and her internships will lead this Fulton, Ohio native to a Masters Degree in Public Administration and a job with the Park Service where she can pursue her dream to help preserve more public land for parks.
